High School Options in Luxembourg: IB, A-Levels or European Baccalaureate?
Luxembourg packs an unusual amount of choice into a small country. Between private international schools, the state's own international classes and the European Schools, a family moving here — or a student planning their final years — can pick from at least four distinct diploma tracks. This guide lays out what actually exists, which schools offer what, and how to think about the choice. (We tutor the IB, so we'll flag our bias up front — but the facts below are the facts.)
Track 1: The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP)
A two-year pre-university course: six subjects (three or four at Higher Level), plus the core — Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Graded out of 45 points and recognised by universities worldwide, including for direct entry in the UK, US, Netherlands and beyond.
Three schools in Luxembourg offer the IB Diploma:
- International School of Luxembourg (ISL) — private, in Luxembourg City. Students typically take IGCSEs in grades 9–10, then the IB Diploma in grades 11–12.
- Athénée de Luxembourg — the state's oldest lycée, and an IB World School since 2010. Offers English-language international classes leading to the IB Diploma, tuition-free.
- OTR International School — private, bilingual English/French school in Luxembourg City (Val Ste Croix), an IB World School since 2020, offering the IB Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme.
Worth knowing: the IB is the only one of these tracks with a single global syllabus and external exams marked internationally — results are directly comparable across countries, which universities like.
Track 2: British A-Levels
The English system: GCSEs/IGCSEs, then typically three or four A-Level subjects studied in depth for two years. Deep rather than broad — ideal for students who already know what they love, and the standard route into UK universities.
- St. George's International School — private, in Hamm (Luxembourg City). Follows the National Curriculum for England, with IGCSEs, A-Levels and BTEC options.
- Lycée Michel Lucius — public school in Limpertsberg with an English-language section offering IGCSE and A-Level studies, tuition-free.
Track 3: The European Baccalaureate
The diploma of the European Schools system: a multilingual curriculum with exams set centrally for the network. Well recognised across the EU, especially for students continuing to European universities.
- European School Luxembourg I (Kirchberg) and European School Luxembourg II (Bertrange/Mamer) — primarily for children of EU institution staff, with limited places for others.
- École Internationale de Differdange et d'Esch-sur-Alzette (EIDE) — public international school in the south, an Accredited European School.
- École Internationale Gaston Thorn (EIGT) — public international school in Luxembourg City (primary in Cessange, secondary in Merl).
- Lënster Lycée International School (LLIS) — public international school in Junglinster, offering European classes alongside the national curriculum.
- École Internationale Mondorf-les-Bains (EIMLB) — public international school in the south, leading to the European Baccalaureate.
Track 4: National diplomas
- Luxembourgish secondary diploma — the classical (classique) and general tracks of the state lycées, taught mainly in Luxembourgish, German and French. Rigorous, free, and the route most local students take.
- French baccalauréat — offered by Lycée Vauban, the French-curriculum school in Luxembourg City, following the French national system.

How to choose
- Where will you apply to university? UK → A-Levels or IB. US/Canada → IB or A-Levels. Continental Europe → any of the four, with the European Bac especially smooth in the EU.
- Specialist or all-rounder? The IB keeps six subjects alive until 18; A-Levels let a student drop everything except their strengths.
- Language of instruction. Be honest about the language your child can write academic essays in — that alone often decides between English, French and German-medium tracks.
- Budget. Private international schools in Luxembourg charge meaningful fees; the public international classes (Athénée, Michel Lucius, EIDE, EIGT, LLIS, EIMLB) are free.
- Support. Whichever track you choose, the final two years are intense. External support — tutoring, study skills, exam technique — makes a measurable difference, especially in the IB's mix of coursework and exams.
