IB exams are the culmination of two years of work, and they reward strategy as much as knowledge. Whether you're preparing for Mathematics AA, Physics, TOK or any other subject, the principles of effective preparation are similar — the key is adapting them to each subject's demands. Creating an Effective Study Timeline
IB exams cover extensive content. Cramming everything into the final weeks is a recipe for anxiety and underperformance, so work backwards from exam day in three phases.
Long-term planning (3–6 months out)
- Content audit: list every topic you need to cover for each subject.
- Prioritization: identify strengths and weaknesses; allocate time accordingly.
- Weekly goals: set specific, achievable objectives.
- Resources: gather past papers, revision guides and notes now, not later.
Medium-term focus (1–3 months out)
- Deep learning: prioritize understanding over memorization.
- Practice application: work through past exam questions by topic.
- Revision cycles: use spaced repetition to strengthen recall.
- Group study: explain concepts to others — teaching exposes gaps.
Short-term refinement (final 1–4 weeks)
- Full practice exams under timed, test-like conditions.

Evidence-Based Study Techniques
Cognitive science is clear about what works. Four techniques matter most:
1. Spaced repetition
Spread study of the same material over increasing intervals instead of cramming. Tools like Anki, or a simple personal review schedule, make this easy to systematize.
2. Retrieval practice
Actively recalling information beats passive re-reading. Test yourself with flashcards, practice questions, or by explaining a concept with your notes closed.
3. Interleaved practice
Mix related topics within a study session rather than blocking one topic for hours. It trains you to distinguish between concepts and select the right method — exactly what mixed IB papers demand.
4. Elaborative interrogation
Keep asking "why". Explaining why a fact is true connects new material to what you already know — particularly valuable in the sciences and TOK.

Mathematics AA/AI
- Practice is paramount: solve varied problems, especially ones combining multiple concepts.
- Master the calculator: fluency saves real marks under time pressure.
- Study mark schemes: learn exactly what examiners award points for.
Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
- Link theory to practice: connect concepts to the experiments behind them.
- Master data analysis: graphs, tables and experimental data appear everywhere.
- Learn the command terms: "evaluate", "outline" and "deduce" require different answers.
Theory of Knowledge
- Build a personal framework for approaching knowledge questions.
- Connect abstract to concrete with real, specific examples.
- Analyze perspectives: practice evaluating competing viewpoints.

- Annotate actively with a personal marking system.
- Practice timed writing — structure under pressure is a trainable skill.

The Power of Practice Exams
Past papers do what no other method can: they build familiarity with format and timing, expose knowledge gaps, refine your strategy, and reduce exam-day anxiety. To maximize them:
- Simulate real conditions — quiet room, strict timing, no notes.
- Use official past papers for the most accurate representation.
- Analyze thoroughly: review slow questions, not just wrong ones.
- Track scores over time to monitor progress and adjust the plan.
Mental Preparation and Wellness
Stress management
- Mindfulness and breathing techniques calm the nervous system — practice them before you need them.
- Positive visualization: mentally rehearse a calm, successful exam.
- Perspective: exams matter, but they don't define your worth.
Physical wellbeing
- Sleep: 7–9 hours, especially in exam week — memory consolidates overnight.
- Nutrition and hydration: even mild dehydration impairs cognition.
- Exercise: regular movement reduces stress and sharpens focus.
Exam Day Strategies
- Prepare materials the night before and arrive early — no rushing.
- Read instructions strategically; analyze what each question actually asks before writing.
- Allocate time by mark value and check progress at intervals.
- If anxiety hits: box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4), then continue. If stuck, mark the question and move on — return later.
Successful IB preparation combines planning, technique, subject-specific work and psychological readiness. The students who improve fastest are rarely the ones who study the most hours — they're the ones who practise deliberately, review honestly, and adjust.
